En noviembre de 2019, Ecuador acogió una serie de reuniones de alto nivel de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), entre ellas la Tercera edición del Foro del Sistema Interamericano de Derechos Humanos (SIDH) y el 174º Período de Sesiones de la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH), que pusieron la abolición de la pena de muerte en su agenda.
