This website is now directly connected to Northwestern University in Chicago, where academics maintain a permanent database on laws and practices in 92 retentionist States or territories. Essential information is available in a simplified format in seven languages and updated daily.
Navigate the list of retentionist countries to get country-by-country information on the laws and practices associated with the application of the death penalty.
This information is taken from the Death Penalty Worldwide database, which also offers an advanced search function (capital crimes, prison conditions, appeal procedures, legal representation…) in English and in French.
Global statistics on abolitionist countries are available from Amnesty International.
The database was created by Professor Sandra Babcock of the Center for International Human Rights at Northwestern Law School’s Bluhm Legal Clinic, in partnership with the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty and with financial support from the European Union.
