Armenia ratified the Second Optional Protocol to the ICCPR on 18 March 2021.

A year a and half after signing the Protocol, Armenia put the final lock on abolition of the death penalty by depositing the instruments of ratification with the United Nations Secretary General.

Armenia became the 89th State Party to the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, aiming at the abolition of the death penalty.

The World Coalition Against the Death Penalty congratulates Armenia for this important step towards universal abolition. It encourages Armenia to also ratify Protocol 13 to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, concerning the abolition of the death penalty in all circumstances.
